More efficient international sea and land logistics: Efficient Flow project

Satakunta’s University of Applied Sciences (SAMK’s) research group, Smart Urban Business (SUB), in cooperation with the project leader Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) and other participants in the project, such as Gävle port in Sweden and Rauma port in Finland are developing a new Ship and Port ICT-application to enhance port operations in the future.

In addition to Efficient Flow projects’ comprehensive approach, the goal is to improve logistics and make the material and passenger flows between the two central Baltic Sea routes more efficient by utilizing the Sea Traffic Management (STM) system.

Target areas for Efficient Flow project are ports between Gävle-Rauma and the Stockholm-Turku seaway, where safer encounters of ships will be examined. Duration for the project is 1.3.2018 – 28.2.2021.

The public resources invested in Efficient Flow project will contribute to a long-term and practical innovation in the operational activities of these ports. This will also improve the digital development and operational capabilities for the ports significantly.

At the same time this will help to achieve the goals set for transport policy of the countries involved in the project, the Central Baltic region and the European Union. Efficient Flow project aims to have 7% savings between the ports and seaways mentioned above.

More information about Efficient Flow

Project objectives:

  • Improve the flow of goods and passengers through the two corridors of Gävle-Rauma and Stockholm-Turku.
  • Contribute to improve two corridors in the Central Baltic area and will deliver lasting results and best practices for application in other ports and corridors of the region.
  • The project will deliver improved processes, business models and ICT tools for enhanced information exchanged between port actors, between ports, between port and hinterland operators and between ports and ships.
  • The project is expected to produce a time saving of 7%.

Project activities:

  • Implementation of Sea Traffic Management
  • By improved information exchange between the actors of the two corridors in the Central Baltic area will contribute to higher efficiency and time saving in both corridors, reduced transport time, higher transport predictability and improved sustainability and transport quality.
  • The project will make the transport flow in the corridors more efficient by improved processes and new digital solutions.
